AT89C2051 microcontroller
The brain of the clock. It counts seconds, decides which digit to light, and listens for button presses.
Think of it as A tiny conductor following a score that was burned into it at the factory.
How to spot it The black 20-legged chip. A notch (or a dot) marks the end where pin 1 lives.
Backwards in its socket means no clock, a hot chip, and possibly a dead chip. The notch must match the notch printed on the board.
If your kit has a socket, solder the socket first and press the chip in last. Touch something metal before handling the chip to discharge static.
